Contraceptive Quick Facts:
Lunelle (monthly shot)

Birth Control Method
Hormonal

Description
Lunelle contains a combination of two hormones, progestin and estrogen, in an injectable form. The shot is injected into a muscle in the arm, buttocks or thigh, once per month.

How It Works
The first injection of Lunelle is usually taken during the first 5 days of a woman's menstrual cycle. Lunelle contains a fraction of the progestin found in Depo-Provera, and less estrogen than is found in birth control pills (the Pill). Both hormones are slowly released during the course of a month. Progestin causes the cervical mucus to become thicker, so sperm cannot reach the egg, and also changes the lining of the uterus so implantation of a fertilized egg cannot occur. Estrogen helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, and helps to keep eggs from being released from the ovaries.

Should You Use It?
Lunelle is a good contraceptive choice for women who like hormonal methods, but have trouble remembering to take a pill each day. It is a good choice for women who like to be discreet about their method of use, as well as for women who are intimate with uninfected, monogamous partners. It is a good alternative for most women who experience nausea while using the Pill.

Effectiveness
The number of pregnancies expected per 100 women per year using Lunelle is less than one.

STI Protection
Lunelle does not protect against the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. If you have a monogamous partner who has tested negative for STIs, or you consistently and correctly use condoms, Lunelle may be a good method for you.

Advantages

  • Nothing must to be taken daily or used at the time of sexual intercourse.
  • An extremely effective form of birth control.
  • Many women have regular, predictable periods while using this method.
  • The menstrual flow while using Lunelle tends to be regular to light.
  • Completely confidential -- no one has to know you are using this method.
  • Nursing mothers can receive Lunelle injections on the advice of their health care professional.
  • Although studies are not complete, it is predicted that Lunelle will not contribute to loss of bone density.
  • Lunelle will not affect long-term fertility.

Disadvantages

  • May cause changes in menstrual cycle, weight gain, or migraine headaches.
  • Can cause menstrual cramping, acne and breast tenderness.
  • Does not offer protection from HIV or other infections.
  • A new injection is required every month. For many women, paying for a monthly appointment may be prohibitive.
  • This method is not advised for women who should not use birth control pills due to smoking, high blood pressure, history of blood clots, etc.
  • Some women stop having their periods when using this method.
  • Should not be used by women who are pre-disposed to gall bladder disease.

Where to Buy It
You must see a health-care professional to get a Lunelle injection, and return every month (23 to 33 days) for a new injection. If you are late for your shot, be sure to use condoms or another method until you receive your next injection.
