My friend and I have a disagreement going. What is the average length of the
female vagina? I say three inches. Being a nurse, I learned this, but he says
12 inches! Help!

Well, neither of you is exactly correct, but you are much closer!
Vagina comes from the Latin word for sheath. In women who have
never given birth, the front wall is about two and a half inches long, while
the back wall is about three inches. After birth, it is usually somewhat larger.
However, the vagina is a muscular structure that can expand and contract
rather substantially. Normally, the walls are relaxed and collapsed together.
But, during sexual arousal, the inner two-thirds expand. This is why the vagina
is sometimes called a "virtual space." During intercourse, most women
can accommodate almost any size penis, including a 12-inch one. So your friend
is not entirely wrong either.
So, what was the bet for? Do I get the prize now? :)
